During the New Year season every brand buys attention: the media space is saturated with promotions and heavy budgets. VIZIT had zero rubles for paid placement. The only way through was not to buy a message, but to create a story that media and people would spread themselves. The second layer is categorical. For decades condoms have communicated masculinity through size: L, XL, XXL. The bigger, the higher the status. The opposite problem — men for whom the standard size is too large — is publicly discussed by almost no one. No open data exists for Russia; extrapolating global figures suggests around 2%, up to 900,000 people. It is the taboo brands avoid. And what others won't talk about is VIZIT's territory.
Problem
To become the most talked-about brand of the New Year season with no media budget. — Communications: break out of the New Year campaign clutter. — PR: generate mass organic conversation and viral coverage with zero paid placement. Target — viral reach of at least 15M (the brand's average across previous campaigns). — Business: grow brand awareness. Target — at least +5 pp.
Solution
The strategy: turn the category's most uncomfortable taboo into a safe, funny New Year story that media and people would want to pass on themselves. That became Gnomdoms — a limited series of mini condoms up to 7 cm long. The smallest condom in the world measures 12 cm. We went shorter. A real product, packaged as a New Year provocation. Virality was built in three layers. Media. On 29 December we sent out a release with the launch details. Russia's largest federal outlets picked it up, from business press to entertainment. For newsrooms it was a rare combination: a real product, a taboo subject, a New Year hook and a headline impossible to scroll past. Social. The story moved into Telegram channels with multi-million audiences and stopped being product news: it became a meme. People tagged their friends and passed it on. Bloggers. A creative mailing: the limited series in a box with a magnifying glass as an unboxing prop. A self-explanatory visual for reviews, needing no further explanation. To close virality back onto the brand, we added a product funnel: a giveaway of the series and limited sales through the site. Sales opened at the peak of attention, and the entire run sold out in a single day.
Results
2,237 publications across media and social in one week. Viral reach of 65.9M — 4.4 times the 15M target. PR Value of 59M RUB (~$590K) against a total project cost under 1M RUB (~$10K): a 59:1 return. Negative mentions below 1% (Brand Analytics). Brand awareness +8 pp against a +5 pp target; consideration +5 pp (Ipsos). The entire limited run sold out in a day. Media budget: zero. In an overcrowded New Year media space, attention was won not by budget but by the courage of the idea: VIZIT took the taboo the whole category avoids and turned it into the most shared story of the season.
