  • The opening of a new Alfa Bank branch in Vitebsk as a city art event involving local artists.
Vitebsk is a city where artistic heritage is part of the contemporary urban environment. It is the birthplace of Marc Chagall and a city associated with Kazimir Malevich, Yudel Pen, El Lissitzky and other renowned artists. Alfa Bank wanted the new branch to become more than a service point. In Vitebsk, a city with a strong artistic identity, the bank connected the opening with local culture and created a long-term public object. A neglected shed next to the branch was transformed into a permanent open-air gallery. Its facade and 14 doors became works by local artists. The project became part of the city’s cultural landscape and continued to work after the opening day.

Problem

The task was to make the opening meaningful for the city. The team had to turn a neglected building into a positive public art object and secure approvals from more than five authorities within two months. The project required individual solutions because every door had different dimensions, fittings and hardware. Individual OSB panels had to be produced for each one.

Solution

Six local artists created 14 original works for the shed’s doors. The facade was designed in the brand’s visual language and painted by a Vitebsk street artist. The opening was developed as a cultural event rather than a formal branch launch. It included a branded reveal, a pop-up gallery, a lemonade bar and the “Key to Art” interactive mechanic. Each guest received a numbered symbolic key, while some keys unlocked original works by the artists. The art object was hidden behind a branded 15th canvas, which was lowered during the presentation. The project deliberately prioritized physical production, craftsmanship and site-specific solutions over complex digital technologies. The shed was not treated as an obstacle, but as the central creative asset. Alfa Bank turned an urban-environment problem into the central creative solution. Local artists transformed the neglected shed into an open-air gallery and a new popular Instagram location, while the branch became part of Vitebsk’s cultural life.

Results

More than 270,000 contacts across media and social networks. More than 500 opening-event visitors. Six local artists created 14 original works. One permanent art location created. A standard opening became a public art performance and long-term brand installation.
