  • Cake Lab's holiday gift packaging line for Ramadan and Eid

Tashkent's market treated Ramadan holiday design mainly as a graphic swap on a standard box: crescents, mosque silhouettes and gold decoration were rearranged, but the object itself, its construction and the way people interacted with the packaging stayed the same.

Cake Lab decided to change not the decoration but the essence — the shape, construction and the way a person physically interacts with the gift. That's what led to the line's unconventional formats — the Yarim Oy sphere and the Ramadan calendar.

Local confectionery brands' assortments had almost no age-based segmentation of gift solutions. There was no dedicated gift format for children that could serve as an emotional alternative to the traditional cash gift given on Eid.

Problem

Task: create a modern interpretation of Uzbek cultural code in Ramadan and Eid gift packaging — a collection that unites different formats and gifting scenarios under one idea, instead of disconnected seasonal solutions.

Insight: during Ramadan and Eid, a gift becomes a way to express attention and respect. Yet a gap existed in the market: traditional festive packaging often felt predictable, while modern design lost its connection to local culture.

Solution

Creative idea
Tradition doesn't disappear — it changes form. The national ornament doesn't vanish from the packaging surface; it migrates to other carriers — color, shape, movement, construction geometry. In the premium line this is expressed through the ornament gradually fading across the surface; in the "Yarim Oy" sphere the same logic is realized literally — the ornament "moves" into volume and motion: the crescent moon becomes both the shape of the box and a moving element inside it.

We also expanded the gifting scenario itself — from an adult premium format to a children's one, creating different expressions of the same cultural ritual of giving. The children's keepsake box isn't a separate story but part of the same system: the same cultural code translated into a language a child understands.

Semantic field: the night sky of Ramadan, a mosque silhouette, the crescent moon as a symbol of the month's beginning, family warmth, a gift as a daily sign of attention. Cake Lab's signature green is preserved as a brand link, in places deepened and paired with dark navy blue — a reference to the night sky.

Construction, materials and production
The entire line, including the "Yarim Oy" sphere, has been fully realized and produced at scale — it is not a concept.

"Yarim Oy" sphere packaging — a spherical box with an internal crescent-shaped compartment that moves when interacted with. The container was developed from scratch, as no comparable format existed on the market. Five rounds of prototypes were made before the final construction was approved. The main technical challenge was that the product weight inside the box far exceeded what the lightweight spherical structure could initially bear, so most of the development time went into reinforcing the structure so the shape holds under the filling's weight without deforming.

Technical specs: 2.0 mm bookbinding board laminated with designer paper and matte lamination; gold foil stamping and spot varnish finishing; a pivoting pin-and-hinge joint between the halves with a magnetic locking clasp; a radial slider mechanism for the crescent with a 180° range of motion.

Ramadan calendar — a separate compartment for each day of the month containing a small gift, dark blue tones, with a hand-drawn illustration of the night sky and mosque. Development took three months.

Premium date boxes — designer paper and dense bookbinding board for tactility and a sense of status; a rigid construction keeps the product arrangement intact during transport without needing extra gift wrapping.

Children's keepsake box — miniature versions of the products in a format and size adapted for children; after use it remains with the child as a keepsake box.

Typography is built on the contrast between an expressive accent typeface for festive messaging and a neutral grotesque for informational text.

User experience
Interaction with the packaging is built around four scenarios: the daily opening of a new compartment in the Ramadan calendar, the movement of the crescent and the sequential opening of the two "Yarim Oy" halves, the ready-to-present arrangement in the date boxes, and the children's keepsake box being reused after the gift is given. Éclair and macaron sets are secured inside so the box can be opened and served or handed over immediately, without risk of disturbing the contents.

The message doesn't end on the outside of the packaging — the inside carries a greeting or a warm wish, revealed only once the person is home, unwrapping the gift together with family.

Communication support
Festive postcards for influencers were developed separately, as part of the collection's communication support.
