Matte is an Uzbek brand of interior and exterior coatings. In a category where colour is the core of the product, packaging paradoxically tends to speak the same technical language: white cans, product specifications, and neutral graphics.

Problem

Problem Uzbekistan has a centuries-old culture of colour, yet this visual language has rarely been used in the paint category. The challenge was to create a local brand that could stand out among international competitors and communicate its origin without relying on literal national symbols or folkloric clichés. Task Find an authentic cultural code that would do more than decorate the packaging — it had to work directly for the product by increasing shelf visibility, unifying the range, and helping differentiate SKUs.

Solution

We turned to bekasam and khan-atlas — traditional fabrics in which colour itself becomes a language. The vertical rhythm of bekasam and the shifting hues of khan-atlas were translated into a contemporary system of stripes. On the packaging, these stripes evoke both textile threads and the marks left by a paint roller. Different palettes give each product group its own character, while a shared rhythm unites the entire range.

Results

The national code became a functional part of the brand rather than a decorative reference. Matte communicates its Uzbek origin through what matters most in the paint category — colour.
